Little guys spend a lot of their first year indoors, so I've found that the most comfortable family photos (for little ones) are taken indoors, in the environment everyone's comfortable. Even with older children, inside photos often work best. I don't think everyone needs to be looking at the camera and smiling for the perfect family photo, either - I love to just find moments when a family looks like a family.
